I thought I should do justice to my blog's name 'The Greek Housewife' by honoring the "Greek" part. So I decided I should have regular posts giving my dear readers little bits of information about Greece or being Greek! They will be numbered random Greek facts that I will put under a category (perhaps a page) named 'Greek Trivial Pursuit'! I hope you will like reading them and get to know me better in the process!
So here goes 'Random Greek Fact #1' :
Knitting, crochet and embroidery are time-honored traditions in Greece. Needlework was always a traditional activity for the women in Greece. The skills are handed down from generation to generation. The women learn the needlework from their mothers and grandmothers. It was a major component of household handicrafts. In the old days since she was young, a girl had to be initiated into the art of needlework in order to sew her dowry (pillows, towels, doilies, tablecloths, aprons, sheets, curtains, and whatever else could adorn her clothes and house. Many of the embroidery images were symbolic, originating in nature, history and legend.
Today most women have abandoned this tradition and don't do any needlepoint except for necessary mending of the clothes! I happen to be one of them! Except for really big works of cross-stitching, that I did when I was much younger, I don't know how to do anything else. I didn't learn it from my mom when I was younger and I'm really sceptical about starting now!
My mom on the other hand is really talented and hasn't given up on it. It's her hobby! Lately she has taken upon it to crochet a queen sized blanket for each of her 4 grandkids! WOW! Mom! What a project!
I have posted photos of her fascinating work and I have a lot more to show you in the future. Here are some samples:
I LOVE those pretty crocheted pieces. I did not know that is Greek. Thank you so much for visiting my blog and leaving such nice comments!!
ReplyDeleteThese quilts are lovely. You must learn how to do this, or it will be a lost art. I've been crocheting, and just now learning to knit. Knitting is so much harder, I think.
ReplyDeleteI love learning about life in Greece and one day hope to visit.
Thanks! I have knitted in the past but find crocheting rather difficult! My mom makes it look easy and tried to show me in the past but I had no interest. It's a pity, cause I think they're beautiful but.....!
ReplyDeleteThis is a craft that is unfortunately getting lost. My mother in law used to do some pretty amazing things, she doesnt do anymore though...my husband hates them but I used to do needlepoint when I was very very young and let me tell you it helped me score serious points when I came to Greece and gifted my husband's grandmother with some of my creations...I think she was the only one who really apreciated them...
ReplyDeleteShe probably was. It is unfortunate really because they're beautiful handwork but the truth is they don't fit in with the decor of our modern (city) flats. Do they?
ReplyDeletethat's what my husband says...and to be honest I agree with him...but I still keep 4-5 pieces stashed in the kitchen, you never know, one day I might use them:)
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower from the Friendly Friday blog hop!
ReplyDeleteKnitting and needlepoint are also popular in the southern United States where I'm from! There are doilies on every flat surface in my grandmother's house! :o)
Welcome Sarah! I didn't know that about the southern United States. Thanks!
DeleteYour mother's craftwork is beautiful! I'm all thumbs when it comes to knitting, crocheting, needlework, so I truly appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteThank you Nell!
DeleteHaha--that's more than I do!I'm bad about even mending clothes. I need to get better...*sigh.* That is beautiful work in the pics though!
